Daniel Wong is an Australian trained consultant general surgeon at Specialist Centre Ballarat, providing a broad range of general surgical care including gallbladder surgery, skin and soft tissue procedures, gastroscopy and colonoscopy, and hernia repair.
Daniel’s particular subspecialty interest is hernia surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction. He performs over 400 hernia repairs annually — including complex, recurrent, and large incisional hernias — and leads the Ballarat Hernia Clinic, a dedicated subspecialty hernia service based at Specialist Centre Ballarat.
AREAS OF PRACTICE:
General surgery — gallbladder removal, skin cancer and soft tissue lesion excision, including local flap reconstruction, minor procedures, hand surgery eg Dupuytren’s, Carpal tunnel, trigger fingers
Endoscopy — gastroscopy and colonoscopy
Hernia repair — all types, from straightforward to complex, using mainly laparoscopic (keyhole), or robotic techniques
Complex & recurrent hernia — including abdominal wall reconstruction and cases requiring co-surgeon involvement
Abdominoplasty — performed concurrently with major hernia repair to optimise outcomes, and in selected cases following substantial weight loss
Emergency general surgery — on-call for acute presentations

Daniel graduated from Monash University Medicine in 2000, then undertook postgraduate training at Eastern Health and Austin Health, before completing advanced surgical training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Western Health. He became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in general surgery in 2010 then undertook further post-fellowship training at Northern Health in colorectal, breast, and thyroid surgery, before developing a focused subspecialty in complex abdominal wall reconstruction, completing advanced training with expert international mentors in Australia, the UK, and USA. In 2024, he incorporated robotic surgery into his hernia practice using the daVinci platform, and now performs more than half of his hernia surgery cases robotically.
Daniel leads the Complex Hernia Clinic at Grampians Health and is the Director of Surgery at Maryborough District Health Service. He is actively involved in the education of trainee surgeons and served as the Supervisor of Surgical Training in Ballarat for 9 years.
