What is oncoplastic breast surgery?

Oncoplastic breast surgery refers to performing breast cancer surgery with attention paid to achieving acceptable cosmetic results. Oncoplastic breast surgery has been shown to positively impact upon quality of life for breast cancer patients. A variety of surgical techniques are used to maintain breast aesthetics following the removal of a breast cancer. Broadly there are two main groups of oncoplastic techniques: level 1 oncoplastic techniques & level 2 oncoplastic techniques.

What is level 1 oncoplastic breast surgery?

Level 1 oncoplastic breast surgery is performed following the removal of a breast cancer lump. The residual breast defect is then closed and remodeling of the breast under the skin prevents breast deformity and returns the breast to a natural shape.

What is level 2 oncoplastic breast surgery?

Level 2 oncoplastic breast surgery is largely performed after mastectomy. If you elect for a breast reconstruction after mastectomy, there are a range of options. Breast reconstruction options after mastectomy include the use of breast implants, your own fat and muscle, or a combination. Some reconstructions are performed at the time of your mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) and others are performed later (delayed reconstruction) or in stages. Each technique has its pro’s and con’s and the decision regarding which type of reconstruction to choose will be discussed with you at your appointment.
